Building Permits & Inspections

Property owners and contractors are responsible for obtaining a building permit prior to the start of remodeling or new construction.  The permit fee is based on the valuation of the proposed improvements.  A copy of the fee schedule link can be found below.

Building Permits are required for the following:

  • New construction

  • Interior remodeling

  • Electrical work

  • Electrical services

  • Plumbing work

  • Heating work

  • Structural work

  • Foundation work

  • Garages/storage buildings larger than 120 sq. ft.

  • Decks more than 30” above ground 

  • Retaining walls higher than 4 ft.

  • Egress windows

Algona operates under the 1997 Uniform Building Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, Edition 2006, Uniform Mechanical Code, 2006 Edition, and the National Electrical Code, 2008 Edition.  If you have questions on whether a Building Permit is required, please contact the Public Works Department at 295-2411.  Failure to obtain a permit or schedule an inspection can result in a stop work order and/or a civil penalty-municipal infraction.

IT IS A MUNICIPAL INFRACTION TO BEGIN ANY NEW CONSTRUCTION OR REMODEL WORK WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS PRIOR TO OBTAINING A BUILDING PERMIT.

IT IS A MUNICIPAL INFRACTION TO OCCUPY ANY BUILDING PRIOR TO OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY PERMIT FROM THE CITY.
