If a marker is set before a burial then the
marker will have to be removed for a burial, as maker sets on the grave. Once
the grave stops settling the marker will be put back.
The marker is set on top of the grave. The grave
will continue to settle up to 2-3 years.
The freezing and thawing each year causes the
ring on the vase to loosen and will be difficult for the vase to stay
upright. Also, the bottom of vase insert
fills with dirt allowing the vase sit in the insert incorrectly.
The grave continues to settle 3-4 month after a
burial. We fill graves with black dirt
once the settling of the grave slows down and then we will seed it.

When the weather and conditions make it necessary for snow removal procedures to be implemented the City of Algona will issue a Snow Emergency. This notice will be announced on KLGA, the City of Algona website, the City of Algona Facebook page, the Algona Police Department Facebook page and the
ALERT IOWA emergency notification system. The intention of the Snow Emergency is to keep the streets and alleys free and clear of vehicles that are normally parked there so snow removal can take place.
Many things determine when
the snow plows are sent out: the rate of snowfall per hour; the moisture
content of the snow; the ambient temperature of the air; the temperature of the
pavement; the wind direction and velocity; the time of day; and the forecast of
the predicted snowfall. Unless extenuating circumstances make it inadvisable to
do so, snowplows are activated when two (2) or more inches of snow have fallen
on the ground. Salt/sand trucks may go out sooner to ensure that main roads and
intersections are safe for travel prior to the snow event’s completion.
Per state law, it is the
home owner’s responsibility for upkeep of the sidewalk. Contact City Hall or
visit the website for proper repair procedures and requirements.
Per City ordinance, it is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain the tree. The city ordinance states that limbs overhanging the roadway must be 15 ft. above the street or 2 ft. behind the curb, and 8 ft. above the sidewalk.
If the right-of-way tree is dead and/or diseased then the City of Algona pays for the removal of this tree. Contact City Hall to schedule a time to view such trees and staff will determine the proper course of action to be taken.
If your mailbox is damaged
by a plow the City will repair or replace it with a standard metal mailbox and
treated post. Call
515-295-2411 to report a damaged box. Residents are responsible for replacing
mailboxes that are knocked down by snow due to a pre-existing state of
disrepair or deterioration. Custom mailboxes are placed in the public right of
way at the property owner’s own risk; repair or replacement will be with a
standard metal mailbox and treated post.
The Street Department has five
(5) employees and are responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and repairing approximately
60 lane miles of roadway and right-of-way, replacing and repairing all signs in
the right of way, performing snow removal on all city streets, alleys, and
public parking lots, removing tree’s on city property and right-of-way,
operating and maintaining all excavation and road maintenance equipment,
reviewing and commenting on construction site plans submitted to the city, and
doing concrete and asphalt paving repair on city property. This list just
scratches the surface of the day to day situations that may occur.
Call City Hall during
normal business hours to report an issue and staff will respond accordingly.
For a resident this can be quite annoying, but unfortunately it
cannot be helped. Snowplow drivers do not intentionally fill driveways. When
plowing a street, the excess snow accumulates along the curbside, gaps such as
an open driveway will inevitably be filled with new snow during this process.
Waiting to shovel until the end of the snowstorm will help minimize the need
for repeated shoveling. When you shovel, do not push the snow into the street.
The practice of depositing snow from driveways and sidewalks into the street is
prohibited by City Ordinance.
The City will remove dead
animals from the streets and right-of-ways. Contact the Street Department at 515-295-2411.
The Kossuth County Transit Service is available
for transportation outside city limits. To schedule an appointment call
641-423-2262.
Monday through Friday
8:00 AM to noon and 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM, excluding holidays. Senior citizens (60+), handicapped and
students $1 per trip. Adults $3 per trip. Call 515-295-2878. A 24 hour request
is suggested to ensure availability. Reservations requested for same day
service are accepted depending on space availability.

Basement floor drains that have dried up will allow sewer gas to enter the home. These drains need to be checked and refilled with water. Pour a quart or two of water in these drains every week or so to keep them filled. Adding a tablespoon or two of vegetable oil or mineral oil to the water in the drain will slow down the evaporation of the water in the drain trap. If the odor persists, contact City Hall during normal business hours or 320-1395 after hours or on nights and weekends.
A sewer backup can lead to
disease, destruction of your valuables, damage to your house and electrical
malfunctions. Prompt clean-up of affected property can help minimize the
inconvenience and damage. Immediately arrange for the cleanup of your property,
take before and after photos of the affected areas, itemize any property
losses, wet-vacuum or remove spillage, mop the floors and wipe walls with soap
and disinfectant, flush out and disinfect plumbing fixtures, steam clean or
remove carpet and drapes, repair or remove wallboard or wall covering, and
clean appliances and ductwork.
Call City Hall during normal business hours at 295-2411 or call the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 320-1395 after hours or on weekends and holidays. . A maintenance crew will be dispatched to your address to determine if the stoppage is in the City main or your sewer service line. If the City main is found to be clear, it is the responsibility of the property owner to call a plumber or sewer/drain cleaning service to correct the problem. The property owner is responsible for maintaining adequate flow to and through the sewer lateral from the property structure and into the City sewer main. If the blockage is in the City main, we will fix it promptly and keep you informed about what is being done.
IMPORTANT: Check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if you have coverage for back-ups. If you do not have coverage, consider adding it to your policy. In most cases the City’s insurance will not cover your damages in the event of an incident
The City of Algona has a sewer camera system
mounted in an enclosed trailer. With this camera set-up, WWT staff can run this
motorized camera down City sanitary sewer mains. By viewing these lines (and recording as
necessary) City staff can assess the condition of sewers, identify plugs, and
determine leaks.
Per City Code, sump pumps, footing drains,
beaver drains, etc. need to discharge either to daylight or to the Storm Sewer
system. Discharge to the Sanitary Sewer system is prohibited and needs removed
immediately. Contact City Hall for further
questions of issues of this nature.
