This year’s summer reading clubs will be exploring 'A Universe of Stories' and we will have lots of new books on subjects related to the theme. We’ll also have many programs including crafts, music, and interactive programs; all ages and families are encouraged to attend.  We will have our kick off on Monday, June 3rd at 5:30 p.m. with a special presentation by Absolute Science.

Newborns and children through five years of age who have not completed kindergarten will take part in the Gold reading group; children age 5 who have completed kindergarten – 10 years old will be in the Teal Club; Club Lime will be ages 11-13 and Club Blue will be ages 14-18.  Garden Storytime will take place in the library’s garden area on Friday mornings. This summer we are expanding our outreach services with a weekly Storytime at the Kossuth County Farmer's Market at 9 am; while parents shop for veggies, the kids can enjoy a story with Miss Vera. All of the clubs can look forward to prizes, drawings, and fun as they read and create 'A Universe of Stories'!

Young Adults

The teens are going to create 'A Universe of Stories' in Club Lime and Club Blue.  Club Lime is ages 11-13 and Club Blue is ages 14-18.  Teen Maker Days will be happening Thursday afternoons.  We will be learning all kinds of things as we get creative with crafts, music, and other interests.  We’ll also be getting outside for field trips throughout the summer. Club Lime takes the traditional approach of tracking their reading on a log.  Club Blue has the option of using a paper log or going online.  Both programs are built on reading as well as encouraging the reader to try new things through a set of optional challenges.

Club Blue, please visit our Young Adult site to register and to find information on upcoming events!

'A Universe of Stories' Discussions
We have two great selections related to the theme 'A Universe of Stories'! In June we’ll focus on how African-American women impacted NASA and the space race with Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. The following month we’ll be reading the thriller Gravity by Tess Gerritsen, a book about a stranded astronaut in a the midst of a health crisis. All are welcome!

If you’d like to reserve a copy of either of these selections, please visit the Library or call 515-295-5476 or sign up here. Discussions take place in Meeting Room A of the Library on the third Thursday of the month at 1:30, 3 pm, and 6 pm.

Coloring for Relaxation
This summer we’re continuing our weekly Coloring for Relaxation program for adults on Monday mornings at 10 am - 11:30 pm beginning on June 3rd. Many grown-ups have found coloring to be a great way to reduce their stress because it’s a time of reflection, conversation, and creativity. Taking some time each day for ourselves can greatly improve both our physical and emotional health for both the short and long term. Patrons will have the chance to try their hand at ZenTangle to create their own designs that can be used to make paper crafts, jewelry, and stencils; ZenTangle is the creation of individual patterned designs, often times inspired by the natural world around us. This a drop-in program so no registration is required. While the Library will provide coloring sheets and colored pens and pencils, individuals are invited to bring their own favorite materials with them. We are looking forward to being able to unwind and socialize while we take a break. Whether you’re a practiced ZenTangler or you haven’t colored since you were a little one, all are invited to join us at the Library for a time of relaxation.

For busy families we’ll also have brain teasers available you can take part in independently, when you have time.
